QUT's degrees



Some students, especially internartional students, are wondering about different degrees offered in QUT. Some students also need to prove that their QUT degree is equivalent to which degree offered in their own country.  
 
For Information Technology, According to Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), QUT’s IT Bachelor is  a Level 7 bachelor degree, IT Honours is a Level 8 bachelor honours degree, and Masters degree (either courework or research) is a Level 9 masters degree.

Bachelor degrees meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 7 bachelor degree. The bachelor degree qualifies individuals who apply a broad and coherent body of knowledge in a range of contexts to undertake professional work and as a pathway for further learning.

Bachelor honours degrees meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 8 bachelor honours degree. The bachelor honours degree qualifies individuals who apply a body of knowledge in a specific context to undertake professional work and as a pathway for research and further learning.

Masters degrees meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 9 masters degree. Masters degrees at QUT are classified as either coursework or research.

Doctoral degrees (PhD) meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 10 doctoral degree.

(d) Bachelor honours degree

Two ways to get Honours:
 (a) a separate 1-year course following a Level 7 bachelor degree
(b) embedded in a Level 8 bachelor degree (4-years).

(e) Graduate certificate and graduate diploma
Graduate certificates and graduate diplomas meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 8 graduate certificate and graduate diploma respectively.

(f) Masters degree
Masters degrees meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 9 masters degree. 1-2 years.

g) Doctoral degree
Doctoral degrees meet the AQF qualifications specifications for a Level 10 doctoral degree.3-4 years.



QUT also offer many double degrees.

IT Honours in QUT

IT Honours -  QUT offers 12-month honours programs providing the foundation skills to design and undertake research.

IT Honours  is a 1-year full-time or 2-years part-time course.  It is still an undergraduate degree.

IT28 (normal IT honours): entry: Bachelor of IT with GPA>=5

IT29 (accellerated Honours): entry: for high achieving students, mostly Dean's Scholars, GPA >=5.5

Honours – QUT offers 12-month honours programs providing the foundation skills to design and undertake research.

About

IT Honours  is a 1-year full-time or 2-years part-time course.  It is more for research training and it is the fastest way to get into our PhD program.  It consists of 8 units, 4 of them are for the 48-credit Honours  project and 2 of them are compulsory research training units: INN700 – Introduction to Research  and INN701 – Advanced research topics.  The other two units are elective units which you can choose from the recommended list of units.   If you want to choose some units that are not in the recommended list, please contact the course coordinator  (Jinglan Zhang) directly. Normally the units/subjects you choose should be advanced units and should be relevant to your Honours research topic.

Why Do Honours

The honours program will expand your career options through exposure to the world of research. Honours is also the perfect pathway to an academic career through PhD studies, where you can become an independent researcher in your own right.

An honours degree signals to potential employers that you are someone with exceptional ability, motivation and commitment to your field. It gives you the chance to integrate the practical and conceptual knowledge gained through your degree. As an honours graduate, you can clearly demonstrate an ability to undertake rigorous independent research. These skills are unique to the honours program and will differentiate you from your peers in the employment market.

IT28/IT29 Honours Entry Requirements

IT28: GPA 5.0 or above    |    IT29: GPA5.5 or above
To be eligible for this course, applicants must have:
• a bachelor degree from QUT or its equivalent, completed within 18 months prior to enrolment, with a minimum grade point average of 5 (on a 7-point scale) or its equivalent, or demonstrated outstanding performance in the final year of the degree, or
• work experience or research considered appropriate by the course coordinator

How to Apply IT Honours Study (IT28/IT29)


Honours study is considered as postgraduate study by coursework although you will get the BIT (Honours) degree. 

1.     If you are a domestic student (e.g. Australian citizen or PR), then you need to apply for admission to IT28 (IT Honours)  or IT29 (Accelerated IT Honours) at QUT directly to QUT Admissions on the PG Form (webstie: http://www.student.qut.edu.au/forms). PG Form is for ALL FACULTIES (Domestic Applicants only) (PDF, 507 KB) Application for Postgraduate Coursework Admission – including Honours – this form can be completed by typing directly in the PDF document.
